The Plan (Blueprint for a 21st Century Appalachia)
People are already working together. In fact, through our parent organization SOAR, more than 3,000 Appalachians worked to create a plan for the future of our region. The plan for a 21st Century Appalachia is not an outside plan promising to save us from ourselves, but a plan written by our people, for our people. Thousands of people are working together and turning this plan into reality by creating real opportunity in Appalachia. Here are the key elements from the plan (follow the links for greater details on the plan or click here to download a PDF of the blueprint):
Broadband. We believe this is the tool that can connect Appalachia to the world and drive innovation.
Industry. To replace jobs lost from coal we need to look outside the region and attract new business.
Talent. We can solve all of our problems with the right tools and education opportunities.
Local Foods. We are a region uniquely positioned to leverage our agricultural assets and that starts with local agriculture.
Business. Local businesses create jobs and opportunities for our communities.
Tourism. The beauty of our region is unlike anywhere else and visitors can drive economic opportunties.
Health. The health of our region is critical to success as we need everyone working together.
You. Most importantly we cannot do this alone and we all need to work together in a true spirit of partnership.
