Shaping Our Appalachian Region, Inc. (SOAR) Healthy Communities is partnering with the University of Pikeville-Kentucky (UPIKE) College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM) and Operation UNITE to host the second substance use disorder education event on October 23rd, 2018. The event will take place at the Health Professionals Education Building (Kentucky College of Optometry) at UPIKE. SOAR and UPIKE invite health professionals, students and stakeholders who share the vision of reducing the scope and impact of substance use disorder and related consequences through education, awareness, prevention, and access to services. 


FREE CME/CE (4) & HB1(4.5) Credit Hours

Credit offered for:

  • Dentistry

  • Nursing

  • Pharmacy

  • Physical Therapy

  • Physician

  • Physician Assistant

  • Social Worker

This event will be offering 4 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Education (CE) credits. 4.5 HB 1 credit hours are also available. *Registration is required to claim credit hours.

Senator Mitch McConnell will update participants on the Opioid Crisis Response Act of 2018 which will focuses on stopping the distribution of opioid and synthetic opioids,  enhance recovery efforts by supporting comprehensive recovery centers that will provide housing, job training, and medically supervised withdrawal management, and establish an interagency task force on trauma informed care to identify, evaluate, and make recommendations regarding best practices for children and youth who have experienced trauma and for babies who are born in opioid withdrawal. We will also be helping to kick off National Red Ribbon Week: Life is Your Journey, Travel Drug Free!  

Jeffrey D. Howard, Jr., MD, Commissioner, Kentucky Department for Public Health, will be speaking at the Provider Education Event.

We will be honoring outstanding UNITE Clubs that help youth develop healthy attitudes and behaviors by learning and practicing life skills, enhancing academic performance, connecting peers, adults, communities and learning through service.

The Kentucky Pharmacy Association will be giving tours of the Kentucky Mobile Pharmacy Van at the Provider Education Event.


Participants are able to attend the onsite event at the University of Pikeville or they are able to attend virtually. The event will be livestreamed and participants will have the opportunity to view the event at any location, be it at a Host Site location or individually.

Onsite registration is ONLY for individuals planning to attend the event at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky (UPIKE).
