Shaping Our Appalachian Region, Inc. (SOAR) Healthy Communities partnered with the University of Pikeville-Kentucky (UPIKE) College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM) and Operation UNITE to host the second substance use disorder education event on October 23rd, 2018. The event took place at the Health Professionals Education Building (Kentucky College of Optometry) at UPIKE. SOAR and UPIKE invited health professionals, students, and stakeholders who share the vision of reducing the scope and impact of substance use disorder and related consequences through education, awareness, prevention, and access to services. 


FREE CME/CE (4) & HB1(4.5) Credit Hours

The event offered 4 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Education (CE) credits. 4.5 HB 1 credit hours. Credit offered for:

  • Licensed Professional Counselor

  • Dentistry

  • Nursing

  • Pharmacy

  • Physical Therapy

  • Physician

  • Physician Assistant

  • Social Worker

Senator Mitch McConnell gave an update on the Opioid Crisis Response Act of 2018 which focuses on stopping the distribution of opioid and synthetic opioids, enhancing recovery efforts by supporting comprehensive recovery centers that provide housing, job training, and medically supervised withdrawal management, and establishing an inter-agency task force on trauma informed care to identify, evaluate, and make recommendations regarding best practices for children and youth who have experienced trauma and for babies who are born in opioid withdrawal. The event also kicked off National Red Ribbon Week: Life is Your Journey, Travel Drug Free!  

Jeffrey D. Howard, Jr., MD, Commissioner, Kentucky Department for Public Health, will be speaking at the Provider Education Event.

We will be honoring outstanding UNITE Clubs that help youth develop healthy attitudes and behaviors by learning and practicing life skills, enhancing academic performance, connecting peers, adults, communities and learning through service.

The Kentucky Pharmacy Association will be giving tours of the Kentucky Mobile Pharmacy Van at the Provider Education Event.
